What’s WordPress?

You have plenty of website builders but nothing can really compare to WordPress. Actually, you have most likely already went to websites powered by it without knowing ex: Prositetutorials ūüôā

About 20% of all websites online are built upon this platform. WordPress is a free and open content management system.

If you’re a true hardcore beginner online or in other words, you don’t have any coding knowledge nor do you desire to spend the next couple of months learning it then WordPress is ideal for you!

You can pretty much setup an amazing looking website without much sweat and going nuts with complicated programming in the next few minutes.

But don’t think WordPress is merely for the fresh off the boat newbies out there! No, no… even famous brands use it, including:

  • CNN
  • Forbes
  • Sony
  • Ebay
  • And other companies If you’d like to see¬†more then click here.

Not just because WordPress is extremely easy to use but also powerful! You have thousands of plugins (similar to applications), which you may install in a few clicks that will turn your website into whatever you desire. For instance:

  • An e-commerce website
  • Quickly produce an enticing and highly converting sales page
  • Add social media sharing buttons

Another great part is this platform is constantly being updated with bug fixes, features and whatnot by thousands of volunteers spread world wide. You also have numberless amounts of free or premium website designs (aka themes) some more oriented for photography, others for business depending on your needs.

I have been using WordPress for several years and for most of my websites and I still find it fascinating! Just considering a few years ago, you couldn’t have a website online without knowing coding or paying a fortune¬†to a programmer.

Now just by following this Prositetutorial¬†and in a few clicks away, you’ll have a stunning website up and running in no time at all!

What’s A Domain Name?

A domain name is simply the web-address for your website, or the name of your website for instance:

  • Youtube.com
  • Google.com
  • Prositetutorials.org

In other words, the domain name acts similar to a home address but in this case on the Internet. It helps people more easily finding the content they want on the web.

More importantly, people will start associating a domain name to a particular service, product or content throughout time.

For instance, when you hear about Youtube what do you think? You immediately connect the name to one of the biggest video sharing websites on earth!

So choosing a good name is quite a tough decision but don’t worry I will later share a few tips to help you.

What’s A Web-Host Provider?

A web-host provider is the company which is responsible of saving all the files from your website including images, written information, videos etc in their servers.

A server is basically a computer, which is only intended to save information and nothing else. Your website will be later saved in a similar room as the one shown below.

server room
The server looks identical to a box when displayed individually and may keep hundreds of websites at one time. This also depends in the type of planning you choose. If you choose to have a shared hosting plan (cheapest plan and ideal for beginners) your website is stored in a computer with others ones.

As most websites gain popularity, get bigger in size and more traffic they commonly transition to a dedicated web-server. In other words, a computer only meant for one website. Even though the pricing is far more expensive compare to the shared hosting. This provides a faster page uploading time (very important on the Internet), more disk spacing to save all the information from the website and other features.

Another important part is a web-host provider also connects a website to the Internet. As you may imagine, choosing an affordable and yet reliable company is extremely crucial for your success online!

A bad web-host provider may cause imaginable amounts of headaches and money loss in the long-term because:

  • Bad costumer support – Your website problems don’t get resolved
  • Slow connectivity to the Internet – Your website takes an enternity to upload¬†onto someone computer’s screen
  • Servers constantly down – Your websites is constantly down because of their poor quality or antique servers

I recommend for you to not choose the cheapest one you first find on the Internet. One of those cases where you get what you pay for.

I use Hostgator and I highly recommend them! I have been using them for several years, they are affordable, have good costumer support and reliable servers. Just click here to get an account with them. You also get a free domain name!

What Plan Should You Pick?

1 – Hatchling Plan –¬†One of the cheapest alternatives but there’s also a catch! You are only able to have one website with this planning. If you later want to make another website then you must upgrade your account.

2 – Baby Plan –¬†I suggest this planning because you may have unlimited number of websites just for a small increase of pricing.

3 – Business plan –¬†Comes with a few extra features. Just read them and see if it’s something that interests you.

How To Choose An Amazing Domain Name?

You will need to select a domain for your website after you chose your planning. Here are few helpful tips:

1 – Brand Name –¬†You may go the brand name route. In other words, a name which may not have an exact meaning or correspond to any product or service offered¬†in your website for example: Nike, Sony, Amazon etc.

As your website grows in popularity people will start associating its name with a particular product, content etc.

2 – Brief Explanation Name – ¬†As someone reads this domain name they get a few impressions about the website’s content for instance:¬†Prositetutorials.

My visitors hopefully get the idea that it has to do with professional tutorials of some kind ūüôā

What You Shouldn’t Do?

1 – Big Domain Names – You shouldn’t make an extensive domain name¬†and avoid using hyphens for example “www.I-love-to-make-websites-for-fun.com”. The reason is:

  • Harder for your visitors to remember
  • Looks terrible and amateur

2 – Keyword Rich Domain Names – If you’re new you probably don’t know what is a keyword rich domain name.¬†But most likely you will find information about this on the web sooner or later. I won’t go much in detail because it may get rather confusing! If you wish to learn more in detail please check my SEO tutorial here.

A few years ago the search engines used the keywords in the domain name to rank a website appropriately in their listings.

As a result webmasters started creating websites named “www.how-to-make-a-website.com, www.best-chocolate-cake-recipes.com” as a way to boost their rankings. But this has no SEO value nowadays!

Actually, you end up with a website that not only looks spammy but sounds terrible! If you’d like to expand it later on then it’s quite hard when you website called, “www.bestwhitesockprices.com”.

What Services Should You Select?

You will see a listing of several services, which may or not choose depending in your needs. I only recommend the “secure and accelerate your site” feature. This option will improve the performance and protect your website against malicious attacks.

hostgator accont features

The other ones aren’t exactly required! Because you have plenty of free plugins to effectively backup your website and to perform all sorts of useful tasks in WordPress. Just press, “checkout now” and next you’ll receive an email with your account details.

How To Setup A Website Email?

A great way to start all your new websites is by creating a dedicated email account for it, why?

  1. You may funnel all your related website messages to it
  2. Your email sounds more professional rather than having one belonging to Gmail, or Outlook

Creating an Email in Cpanel

After you have login into your Cpanel, which should look similar to the image you may see on top. Search for a small icon called, “Email Accounts” under “Mail”.

In the next page, simply select your website from the drop down menu,¬†example: [email protected]

Just choose a password and then create your email account.

How To Install WordPress?

1 – Select the “Quick Install” option inside of your Cpanel.

2 – Now just press the button saying, “Install WordPress” found in the Mojo Marketplace.

WordPress Installation

3 – Click once more in the Install WordPress option in the next page.

4 – Afterward, just choose from the listing your website and fill all the required fields.

5 – Press the installation button. You’ll see an installation bar filling up, once completed you’ll receive an email with your username and password. This information is required so you’re able to login into your WordPress dashboard.

How To Access Your WordPress Dashboard?

Head over to your website by typing in its URL into your web-browser. You’re most likely going to run into a small problem! You’ll see a Mojo Marketplace page rather than your website.

The reason for this is because you have a Mojo plugin installed. It comes with the standard installation of WordPress. ¬†It may take a couple of hours or days until it clears out and you’re able to see your website.

But don’t worry, you won’t need to wait as long! Just take the next steps to remove this plugin:

  1. Go back to your Cpanel
  2. Search for the file manager option
  3. After clicking on the icon a new window pops out. Now select your website from the listing provided
  4. Inside you’ll see all the files belonging to your website
  5. Just click on wp-content and then plugins
  6. In this folder, delete mojo-marketplace-hg

Delete Mojo Marketplace

Go back to your website and refresh it. You will no longer see a Mojo Marketplace page rather an ugly website! Okay, now it’s time to¬†get busy and make your website outstanding! For this, you will need to login to your website back-end.

Just write in front of your URL  /WP-Admin as shown in the image below:

Insert your username and password, and press login in the next page. Now you’re taken to the dashboard area, here is where you’ll spend most of your time either writing new articles, or building your website in someway or another.

How To Change The Permalink Structure?

I recommend for you to immediately change the permalink structure of your web-pages. At the moment, as you create a new page the URL structure from it will look similar to this:¬†“www.example.com/16-05-09/post-name”

Not only is this bad for SEO purposes but it also looks awful for your visitors! For you to make your URL cleaner select permalinks under settings inside of your WordPress dashboard.

In the custom structure, write the following line “/%postname%/” and press save.

postname permalink structure

How To Choose A New Theme?

One of the first aspects you want to immediately change is the theme of your website. A theme is nothing more than a website design or layout. You may literally alter it in a blink of an eye with WordPress and without losing any of the information you already have.

However, I always recommend beforehand to make a backup. A few themes sometimes come with bugs, which may damage your website after their installation.

If you’d like to learn how to easily setup a¬†backup plugin¬†then click here.¬†¬†For you install a new theme then:

  1. Select, “Appearance/ Themes” inside your WordPress dashboard
  2. Press the blue button saying, “Add New” in the theme page
  3. Just write in the small search box, “optimizer” and press search
  4. It should appear as the first result in the listing. Just press to install it and in the next page, activate Optimizer.
  5. You’re done! Go to the front-page and refresh your website to see the new crazy changes!

In regards to themes, you have thousands upon thousands of them. Some are free and others are premium, meaning you must pay to use them. They usually come with extra features, such as a better design with more customization options, and customer support.

But fortunately, you have mountains of wonderful free themes for all types of websites. In my case, I decided to go with Optimizer due to its simplistic nature and wide diversity of features. Sure, you may pick another one depending on your taste and needs!

How To Setup Your Theme?

One of the most powerful aspects of Optimizer is its abundance of customization options. You are able to pretty much build your website in any way you like!

For you to change your website looks, head over to “appearance/customize” in WordPress dashboard.

Optimizer Theme Customize Panel

Site Layout – You can change either between “Full Width” or “Boxed” layout. The full width will stretch your website until it occupies someone’s computer screen.¬†If you prefer to give your website a more classical look then select the boxed layout.

Basic Style

You can select the background color of your website, or include an image.

Basic Fonts

Site Content Family – Here select¬†the font you’d like for your posts and pages.¬†I suggest for you to choose an easy to read font family between 16 to 18 pixels as size.

Headings, Menu and Post Titles Font – The font-family for the header 1, header 2, …, etc.

Turn Menu Text & All Headings to Uppercase –¬†Do you want your headlines in uppercase or not?

Site Identity РYou may upload a favicon here. A favicon is a small icon appearing the tab section of your web-browser as shown above. For this, you will need to design one by using Photoshop or another alternative.

Just grab Photoshop 30 day free trial by clicking here.¬†A few things¬†are hard to describe by words, therefore, if you’d like a clearer understanding I recommend for you to watch my video at 52 minutes. Also make sure to install Photoshop and have it opened.

You will see a window similar to the one shown below:

Using Photoshop

Just follow the next steps to create a favicon:

1 – Go to file click on, “New” appearing in the left corner

2 – Create a new layer 16×16 pixels

5 – After you have your icon image, click on file and open it in Photoshop. .

6 РYou probably will need to clean the background around your image. Just click on the magic wand appearing in the tool box. Next select the areas you want to remove. Hold the keyboard shift key to be able to select multiple areas at once. Now simply press delete and all the unnecessary spacing will immediately disappear.

Remove the white space in Photoshop

Reducing image size

10 – For you to pass your image onto the layer background. You must first select your image layer (the one you previously reduced its size) and drag and drop onto the background.

Making a Favicon

Header Section

Here you have a few options intended to change the header area. The header is the top section of your website where you usually have a logo or banner.

Not going much in detail with these features, since they’re pretty straightforward. Just test them and pick the ones you prefer to use.

Site Title & Logo

If you’d like to create a custom logo then go back to Photoshop and follow the next steps:

1 – Create a new layer with 200px (width) by 65px (height). After some testing, I found this to be the best sizing.

2 – Unlock the background layer as shown previously

3 – Add a title by selecting the small “T” icon in the tool box

Writing text in Photoshop

4 – Choose an appropriate font-family for your logo

Choose an appropriate font family

5 РJust click on the blank layer, while you have the text option enabled. You will be able to see a cursor blinking where you can start writing text. Now write the title for your website.

If you’re having trouble making a good logo then try a website called,¬†“Fiverr“. Just for 5 dollars you’ll find bundles of people willing to make one for you.

I also suggest for you to watch other more detailed videos about Photoshop in Youtube. If you’re serious about this then most likely you’ll use Photoshop in a daily basis.

6 – If you want a transparent background then make sure to delete the background layer and save it as .png file.

7 – Once done head over to the customize panel and upload your logo

Upload logo

Here you are able to change the colors of the links in the menu navigation bar

Front Page

If you want to add a different slider image then use this option. Use Phototoshop to make one with 1280 pixels by 500 pixels. As for images search for free backgrounds in Google, or try Pixabay.

Once done just upload it to your website.

Static Slider Content

Use this feature to change the text on top of the slider image. After pressing edit, switch from html to visual mode. In this area, you may write and format your text anyway you want.

The formatting options may seem familiar if you ever used any other text editor, such as Windows Word, etc.

Customize button section

If you want to change the change the button color, shape, or text you have a few options below for this purpose. You also need to include the URL in “Button Link” area. In other words, where you desire to redirect your visitors.

Frontpage Widgets

You are able to choose the widgets you want in the sidebar of your website. I explain this more in detail later in this guide.

Static Front Page

You have two different options here. Either have the front-page of your website working as a blog. Meaning, all your posts will appear from the most recent to the oldest ones. Or, the other option is the static page. If you prefer a more classical website with a single page perhaps explaining your business, etc.

The footer section is seen in the very bottom of each website. Commonly where the copyrights, privacy policy or contact us page are displayed.

Footer Widgets

Something I’ll explain later in more detail.

You may want to change this area and put the copyright for your website. Not only makes your website look a bit more professional but it also protects it. Just press edit content and write the following:

Post and Page Style

Social Links

A powerful option that connects your social media account to your website.  Just add the URL of your Facebook, Twitter or other profiles into the blank spacing.

Social Media Networks

This feature is truly wonderful! Many times with other themes you need to install plugins for the same purpose. After someone clicks on the icon, they’re immediately taken to your social media profile. Increasing the amount of subscribers, likes or shares to your page.

Mobile Layout

Here you have few extra options only meant for mobiles. You may select to hide the slider image, right sidebar, or page header from appearing in your visitors’ screens.

Custom Coding

If you want to further improve the design of your website then write the necessary coding lines here for instance:

  • Increase or decrease the font sizing
  • Style the navigation bar and more…

Just use Google to search for the coding lines you want. You most likely will only need to copy and paste them here.

Menus And Widgets

I will configure both options later inside of WordPress dashboard.

How to Use WordPress Plugins?

Plugins are similar to applications or add-on. After installed, they provide all sorts of powerful actions to your website for example:

  • You may transform your website into an e-commerce store
  • Add social media button
  • Block comment spam

I typically install these two plugins here:

1 – Contact Form 7 – One of the most popular plugins to easily create contact forms on the fly.

2 – Social Media Feather –¬† Add nice looking social media buttons to your website. Making it easier for your visitors to share your content throughout the web.

How to Install a WordPress Plugin?

1 – Go to the plugin¬†section and press, “Add New” inside of WordPress dashboard. Afterward, write “contact form 7” in the search box and press enter. The plugin most likely will be the first one appearing in the listing. Just click on “install now” and in the following page “activate plugin”.

Contact Form 7 Installation

Now you will see a new section called, “contact” in the sidebar.

The other plugin to install is social media feather. I prefer this one compared to others because just in one pack you get both, including: sharing and follow us buttons.

Just follow the instructions provided previously to install Social Media Feather.

How to Setup Social Media Feather

You see a new “Social Media” tab. Inside of the plugin settings, you’ll find tones of features. I recommend for you to spend some time checking each one of them and choosing the ones you prefer. Also make sure to immediately check, “display sharing button”.¬†

social media feather features

I suggest for you to connect all the related social media profiles. You will see a few blank lines where you need to add their URL. Afterward, you may integrate these buttons into your widget area.

Integrate Social Media URL

Just go to appearance/ widgets. You may include several types of widgets, such as:

  • Calendar
  • Custom Menu (navigation bar)
  • Categories (I’ll explain this more in detail later)
  • Text Area

In this case, select social media feather: follow us. Just drag and drop it into the sidebar area.

How to Create An About Page?

Every single good website should always have an about page! Where you can either talk about yourself, team behind your website etc. Also including a photo of you or each staff member helps a lot! Your audience will more easily connect with your website this way.

Just create a new page and name it “About me or us”, and write whatever you want.

About Us

How to Create a Product Page

As you probably still remember, we haven’t connected a web-page to the button in the homepage.¬†For this reason, you need to make one by adding a new page and writing the necessary content. This¬†can be a product, sales, review, tutorial, course or any important page you want your visitors to have easy access.

After you have done your page just follow the next steps:

  1. Copy the URL (web address, or link) from your product page
  2. Paste the URL in the blank space as shown in the imge below
  3. Save and publish, refresh your website and see if the button is working properly

How to Create WordPress Posts?

Posts are the most important content in your website. You should use them for:

  • How to guides
  • X Tips to…
  • Reviews

Basically, all the gold nuggets you want to share with your visitors. On contrary, pages is only meant for static information this includes: contact forms, about pages, sales pages. Or any other piece of content that’s permanent and you want your visitors to¬†have easy access.

Also posts have a few extra options, such as:

  1. Featured image – You may choose an enticing image, which you want displayed as a thumbnail in your blog section
  2. Categories – A simple way to organize all your posts by specific topics

Just as with pages, you have an exclusive section called posts in WordPress dashboard. You may click on it and a few new options will be shown. For you to add a new post just click on it, next you’re redirected to a blank post where you can start writing content.

I won’t go much in detail here because most of the options are similar to pages. But you have a, “Set Featured Image” appearing in the bottom of the sidebar. Just click on the link and choose the image you prefer, and press the button.

Set Featured Image

Afterward, just publish your new post. Notice near the publish button, you also have a few other options, such as:

  • Save as draft –¬†You may safe as draft for later editing. Great if you don’t want immediately to publish your post online
  • Schedule Post – Set the time and date to automatically publish your post in your website

Set Draft or Schedule post

If you head over to the blog section of your website and refresh it, now you will see a thumbnail image in the snippet.

Featured Image Thumbnail Snippet

How to Use WordPress Categories?

One of the main reasons you want to use posts is because the category option. This feature allows you to organize all your posts under a specific topic. This helps your visitors more easily find the content belonging to a specific topic.

I recommend for you to immediately select a couple of topics you wish to talk in your new website. Later on, you may change them or even add new ones as you see fit.

For this, go back to your WordPress dashboard and under posts, you’ll find categories. In the category page, you need to choose:

Name Р Main topic of your posts

Slug – URL extension for the category page, example: www.yourwebsite.com/your-category

Parent –¬†Choose the parent if it’s a sub-category, example:

If the main topic was about chocolate recipes then that’d be very broad. For this reason, you could create related sub-categories about chocolate cake, chocolate cookie recipes, etc

Description –¬†A brief explanation of the category. Commonly, you’re the only one able to see this description but with some themes it may be public.

WordPress categories

How To Categorize Your WordPress Posts?

Just go back to your overall post area, once you over one of your posts, you’ll see a few new options appearing right below. You must click in the quick edit link, you’ll see a category section and below choose the appropriate category for that posts.

After, just do the same thing for all the posts you have in your website.

How to Categorize WordPress Posts

How To Include a Custom Menu?

Most people wonder why they need to create a menu in WordPress if they already have one. Well, the one you see at the moment is automatically generated.

In other words, you aren’t able to alter the pages or organize them the way you want. For this reason, you must create a custom menu.

WordPress Custom Menu

  1. Go back to your WordPress dashboard
  2. Under Appearance section click on Menus

In the menu page, choose to create a new menu and add a name to it. Now on the sidebar, just check the fields you want to include.

Create a custom menu

If one the fields isn’t appearing then on the top right corner, you’ll see screen options. After you click on it, you’ll be able to add an extra field.

You may drag and drop the fields any way you want to display them in your menu.  I suggest for you to include a custom link redirected to your front page. This way your visitors may easily go back to it.

Just click on custom link, insert the right URL and link text (home), and add to menu.

In menu settings, you want to choose the area you want your menu to appear in your website. Using this theme, you¬†only have one option “header navigation”, which you want to check. However, with other themes you typically have three or more choices.

I don’t suggest for you you to select “Automatically add new top… ” because this will automatically generate new pages ¬†in the menu each time you publish them.

Afterward, simply save menu and header over to your website and refresh it so you’ll see the changes done. As you may see below, I have included my home, categories, contact and about links in the menu..

Front Page Custom Menu

How to Change The Widget Section?

A widget is a small application, which you may include in several areas of your website. These areas depend from theme to theme.  A few themes, you may add widgets to the footer, sidebar, header section and other places.

In this case, I am only going to add a few widgets to the sidebar. If you’d like to access this area, you’ll need to go to appearance/ widgets found inside of the WordPress dashboard.

You may remove some of the useless widgets that come integrated with WordPress installation, such as: categories, meta and archives.

Just click on the small arrow in the right corner or the widget, and you’ll see a new¬†option for this.

Widget Area

Afterward, just drag and drop the widgets you want to display in the sidebar. I recommend to include the social media feather, search (enabling visitors to easily find the content they need) and text widget (add any written content).

drag and drop widgets

At the moment, you have everything done, you have a normal looking blog. Yet, if you’d like to give your website a unique appearance then you have a special features for this.

In the widget area, you’ll see a few different website areas, such as: front-page widgets and footer widget. Also Optimizer has a few unique widgets.

Just try using their about widget, advanced text, block and post widget and make sure to place¬†them in the front-page or footer area. After you tweak their options, you’ll have a similar front-page as shown below…

Modern Looking Website

This front-page layout is ideal if you have great images to display, such as a cooking, photography, website. In case you have a blog then the other normal layout is better.
